Westfields v St Andrews

MATCH REPORT - Saturday, January 07, 2017

Westfields 3 - Greaves 20,37, Grant 12
St Andrews 2 - Doughty 4, Brennan 18

Attendance 168

Westfields produced a hard-working non-stop display over visiting St Andrews of Leicester and recorded a Midland Football League double when they followed on from their 4-0 away win at St Andrews on the opening league day of the season to record a fine 3-2 home win on Saturday at allpay.park.

All the goals came in an action-packed first half display when both sides produced an end-to-end non-stop flow of football as the visitors snatched an early lead when Leon Doughty was on hand to turn a left wing cross past Keiron Blackburn for the opening goal.

However, Westfields came back immediately and Sirdic Grant with his lightning pace scored a fantastic goal to put the 2 sides level in the 12th minute when he shot low past the advancing visitors’ keeper.

However, Shay Brennan then regained the lead for St Andrews when Keiron Blackburn went full length to push away a left wing shot but Brennan was on hand to slam home the rebound to put the visitors in front once again.

In a ding-dong battle Westfields drew level just 2 minutes later when Richard Greaves put Westfields level and then shortly before the interval Greaves headed home a left wing cross from Ben Miller who had beaten his full-back, cut inside and put over a menacing cross which Greaves made no mistake with from 6 yards.

In amongst all the goals there was plenty of action as Kane Kahaki returning from injury was dismissed in the 30th minute when referee Alan Robinson decided his tackle was in a dangerous manner and showed the Westfields defender a red card, much to the surprise of everyone on the ground and in the stand.

In the second half Westfields’ ten men had to battle and Nathan Summers and Ben Miller in particular were outstanding at the back whilst Keiron Blackburn made 3 superb saves, first from Brennan, secondly from Towers and then late in the game saved at point-blank range from Doughty who seemed certain to score.

St Andrews pushed forward in search of an equaliser but the Westfields defence held firm and Blackburn in particular saved again at point-blank range towards the end of the game when an equaliser looked on the cards for the visitors.

This was a vital win for Westfields to keep them up in 3rd place in the league, particularly as both Lye Town and Alvechurch both won their games on Saturday.

Westfields now go to 2 away games, having to make the journey to Brocton on Tuesday night and on Saturday go to Highgate United.
