SAINTS DOWNED AS FIELDS FLOURISH
A late Craig Jones penalty was enough to win a high tempered game against a well set up St Andrews side. Jones’ goal not only won the game but also gave Fields £1,500 in prize money and a place in the Third Round of the FA Vase as one of 64 remaining sides.
As the game was about to Kick off, the St Andrews fans kicked up their vocals in an attempt to get into the heads of the Westfields team, if anything it did the opposite as Fields were the quickest team out the blocks. Some confident passing and build up play was enough for Fields to create the first chance of the game. Nathaniel Lewars did enough to make contact with a Carl Morgan cross, but unfortunately for Lewars saw his shot loop off his foot and hit the top of the cross bar.
Continued pressure from Fields saw Zac Sirrell try his luck from the edge of the 18 yard box but saw his effort comfortably saved by Saints stopped Antcliffe.
With two early chances it was only a matter of time before Fields took the lead. As the 10 minute marked approached that’s exactly what happened. A bout of free flowing football down the right hand side saw Right Back Michael Tambling find acres of space in the Saints box before calmly side stepping an on rushing Defender and firing his shot into the bottom corner.
Against the run of play Saints got back into the game when lively Striker Shay Brennan was sent running through on goal before putting his shot in the far corner of Gwynne’s goal. Brennan’s goal was the only real chance that the Saints had in the First Half.
HALF TIME: Westfields 1-1 St Andrews
An off the ball bust up as both teams departed the field set the trend for the feisty Second Half.
St Andrews come out all guns blazing in the Second Half as they threw several early attacks towards the Westfields box, luckily for Fields Centre Back’s Joel Edwards and James Febery were on hand to block off Matt Gwynne’s goal.
An early bout of pressure from St Andrews was a much needed wake up call for Westfields who saw themselves pick up from where they left off in the First Half. End to end play from both teams saw frustration grow as neither team could find space around the box to fire clear shots at goal.
When the game hit the 80 minute mark both teams thought the game was going to Extra time but a handball decision against Saints player Luay Bashir lead to Westfields being awarded a Penalty. After letting Nathaniel Lewars take a Penalty in the last game which he missed, Craig Jones wanted this one more than ever. Confident as you like Jones fired his Penalty into the top left corner of the Keeper’s goal putting Fields a goal in front.
In an attempt to hold their lead Fields were looking to pump the ball into the corner’s. Both Dean Lee and Substitute Tom Boyle were doing an excellent job in keeping the ball in the right half of the pitch.
St Andrews had one final chance to send the game to extra time when in the last minute they saw a shot agonizingly skim off the top off the cross bar and out for a goal kick. To the relief of the Home fans this was practically the last kick of the game.
Once again Fields leave it late but have done enough to put themselves in the draw for the next round.
