Westfields v Stourport Swifts

MATCH REPORT - Saturday, March 17, 2018

Westfields 2 - Jones 52, Kingsofrd 88
Stourport Swifts 1 - Rogers 75

Attendance 90

Westfields beat the weather and indeed beat visiting Stourport Swifts to gain a hard-fought 2-1 home win at snowy allpay.park on Saturday when, after being reduced to 10 men, Westfields came back to win 2-1 with a late goal from substitute Kingsford Adjei.

Westfields’ ground passed a late fitness test but played exceptionally well despite the 10 minute snow storm and Westfields gave a gritty performance to earn 3 much-needed points which hoisted them up into a respectable mid-table position.

Local rivals Stourport had beaten Westfields away earlier in the season in the league and also knocked them out of the Polymac League Cup so Westfields’ result gave them double revenge for earlier defeats.

Westfields suffered an early blow when James Febery was penalised for a bad tackle in the penalty area but the Stourport penalty was brilliantly saved by Alex Harris in the Westfields goal.

However, 5 minutes later Febery was again penalised for a heavy tackle which saw him red-carded and Westfields reduced to 10 men.

Despite the 10 men Westfields gave a solid performance and kept their shape defensively with Matt Sysum and Sam Gwynne outstanding in the rear defence line.

After a goal-less first half Westfields broke the deadlock when Gwynne got down the right flank and created an opening for Craig Jones who slotted home a left-foot drive from the end of the box.

This lead gave Westfields more confidence and the 10 men worked tremendously hard until the 75th minute when Sam Mendes was guilty of a poor pass which was intercepted and the Stourport substitute Jack Rogers raced clear and fired low past Alex Harris into the bottom corner of the net for the Stourport equaliser.

With the snow coming down heavy Westfields mounted pressure on the Stourport defence and manager Andy Bevan played his ace card and brought on jack-in-the-box striker Kingsford Adjei who added that little bit of pace and magic to the front line.

Westfields got their deserved winner in the 88th minute when a high cross came into the penalty area and Matt Sysum headed the ball down to Kingsford Adjei who flicked the ball into the roof of the net to give Westfields a 2-1 lead.

With the referee adding on additional time for substitutions and injuries Stourport took advantage and did everything they could to draw level but again Alex Harris and Sysum were strong at the heart of the Westfields defence and Westfields stood firm with their shape and defensive qualities to earn a 2-1 home win and 3 valuable points.
