Westfields v Stourport Swifts

MATCH REPORT - Monday, September 24, 2018

Westfields 4 - Antwi, B.Hayes 2, Molyneux
Stourport Swifts 1 - J.Thomas o.g.

Westfields put behind them their 3-1 defeat at Loughborough by reaching the second round of the Midland Football League Cup when they disposed of Stourport Swifts 4-1 at allpay.park on Monday night.

Following the 3-1 defeat at Loughborough University on Saturday, Andy Bevan the Westfields Manager made wholesome changes and these paid off as early as the first minute when Seth Antwi scored following a neat piece of work by Jamie Molyneux. Westfields were in rampant mood against their local rivals and Ben Hayes increased the lead in the 12th minute.

Westfields displayed some quick attacking soccer, particularly with Josh Thomas showing up well on the right flank and Antwi weaving his way along the front line with the experienced Jamie Molyneux.

It came as no surprise when Westfields increased their lead in the 40th minute, again when neat interplay involving Craig Jones put Ben Hayes in space and he made no mistake to put Westfields into a commanding 3-0 lead.

However, just before half-time Westfields conceded a goal when a Stourport attack weaved its way down the right flank and in an attempt to clear the ball for a corner, Josh Thomas placed the ball just inside the post to beat the home keeper, Ian Havard, with an own goal.

Nevertheless, after the break Westfields maintained their superiority and following good work by Craig Jones and Ben Miller, Jamie Molyneux was on the spot to slot home Westfields’ fourth goal from eight yards to put Westfields into a 4-1 lead.

However, the hardworking visitors continued to attack and Mark Danks and Joe Billingham both went close although the Westfields defence, to which Khane Khaki returned following an absence through injury, performed well and kept the visitors at bay.

Westfields also introduced youngsters, Ollie Smith, George Bell and George Hayes from the substitutes’ bench in the second half to give them an early baptism of first team football and they consolidated the scoreline to put Westfields through to the second round of the Midland Football League Cup when they will travel to Racing Club Warwick in the second round at a date to be agreed in October/November.

Westfields now travel on Saturday to play league leaders Ilkeston Town, kick-off 3 pm at Ilkeston.
