STUDLEY SPOIL RUN

Westfields suffered a surprising 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Warwickshire visitors Studley at allpay.park on Saturday when Westfields lost only their second MFA league game on home soil.

It was a very disappointing display by the Westfields’ side in front of their 103 loyal fans and came as a surprise result after 2 impressive away performances at Rocester and Loughborough.

Westfields had Jon Pugh back in goal and he was soon in action doing well to hold onto an Ian Mitchell drive.

Westfields were frustrated in the early stages as Mark Davis and Daryl Addis both got caught in the Studley offside trap.

However, the best chance for Westfields to break the deadlock came on the half hour when good work by Sam Harrison and Jamie Addis gave Mark Hibbard a chance but his curling 20 yard shot was brilliantly saved at full stretch by Matt Harris.

Pugh then did well to bravely dive at the feet of Lee Ross as the big Studley striker was clean through on goal but right on half-time the visitors took the lead when they forced a right wing corner and Jack Edwards rose above the Westfields’ defence to powerfully head home past Jon Pugh to give the visitors a 1-0 interval lead.

At the break, Westfields’ manager brought on substitutes Phil Glover and Ashley Day in a bid to add more bite to the Westfields’ side and this paid dividends as in the second half Westfields should have equalised when from a left wing cross Mark Davis rose to head goalwards but his header flew inches over the cross bar with the best chance of the game.

Westfields then got the ball into the net but Daryl Addis was ruled “offside” as Westfields pushed forward to force an equaliser but Studley defended well with Ian Mitchell in outstanding form.

Westfields forced a run of 5 corners midway through the half but could not force an equaliser and were then caught on a counter attack when Studley broke away and in the 82nd minute a cross shot by Lee Ross was deflected by Mark Hibbard into his own net to put the visitors into a 2-0 lead.

Westfields tried in vain to get back into the game but could not break down a well organised Studley team who had earlier been awarded the MFA Team of the Month award for November with 4 league wins during that month.
