Westfields v Wolverhampton Sporting

MATCH REPORT - Monday, August 27, 2018

Westfields 2 - Reeve, Hayes
Wolverhampton Sporting 0

Westfields continued their recent good form with a 2-0 home win over visiting Wolverhampton Sporting Community on Bank Holiday Monday.

The former West Midland League Premier Division Champions, newly promoted to the MFL this season, gave a very good account of themselves and despite good attacking play by Westfields the score remained goal-less at the interval.

Westfields had enjoyed the better of the exchanges in the early period and Ben Hayes and Ben Miller both went close with efforts whilst at the other end Keiron Blackburn had to move smartly to prevent 2 goal-scoring opportunities by the visitors.

However, after the break Westfields got off to a storming start when Matt Reeve rifled in a tremendous shot to put Westfields 1-0 ahead in only the 46th minute and then 5 minutes later Craig Jones floated over a beautiful cross and Ben Hayes headed home at the far post to put Westfields into a commanding 2-0 lead.

Earlier in the game Wolverhampton Sporting Community had lost their skipper following 2 yellow cards but the 10 men from Wolverhampton gave a spirited display but found the Westfields back 4 in sound form.

Jones then almost made it 3-0 when he thumped a tremendous drive against the crossbar and then Ben Miller had a great chance to increase Westfields’ lead from the penalty spot after Matt Reeve had been pulled down but Miller sent his spot-kick wide of the target.

Westfields had to work hard to preserve their 2-0 lead and despite introducing their substitutes Seth Antwi, Keanu Cooper and Mark Magee further goals would not come against a well organised Wolverhampton defence.

However, Westfields controlled the game with sound play to register their 5th league win of the season which took them up into second spot just behind league leaders Ikleston Town.

Next weekend Westfields face a 2 match away period when they go to Nottinghamshire to visit Long Eaton United on Saturday, kick-off 3pm, and then on Monday go to Romulus for another league match, kick-off 7.45pm.
