Westfields v Worcester City

MATCH REPORT - Wednesday, January 24, 2018

Westfields 2 - Molyneux 1, Greaves 32
Worcester City 4 - Reynolds 25, Birch 36, Hughes 85, 90

Attendance 238

Westfields were beaten 4-2 at allpay.park by neighbours Worcester City in a pulsating, end-to-end, Midland Football League Premier Division game last night when 2 late goals from former West Bromwich Albion striker Lee Hughes kept Worcester City in the hunt for a promotion place in the Midland Football League Premier Division.

Westfields had opportunities to have taken the game earlier but both Ben Hayes and Jamie Molyneux wasted golden opportunities to have put Westfields ahead following the 2-2 score line at the interval.

Earlier in the game Westfields had got off to a superb start when Jamie Molyneux converted a Ben Hayes cross in only the first minute but Worcester hit back on the half hour to equalise through Dave Reynolds and then Westfields went ahead when a long-range cross-shot from Richard Greaves was fumbled by former Westfields goalkeeper Matt Gwynne and ended up in the back of the net.

However, before half time in this end-to-end game former Westfields striker Brad Birch headed Worcester level as the two sides went in from a pulsating 45 minutes with the score at 2-2.

Both sides in the second half had opportunities to go ahead but Alex Harris in the Westfields goal produced 2 flying saves and at the other end both Ben Hayes and Jamie Molyneux were through on goal but wasted the opportunities by ballooning the ball wide of the goal with only Gwynne to beat.

Westfields then paid dearly for their mistakes when, with just 4 minutes remaining, Hughes got on the end of a Brad Birch cross to put Worcester in front, much to the delight of their 150 travelling fans, and then right in the last minute Hughes made the points safe for the visitors when again he scored a fine solo goal having got away from the Westfields defence to beat the advancing Alex Harris and give Worcester a 4-2 away win to keep them in the promotion hunt.

Attendance: 238.
