Westfields v Shawbury United

MATCH REPORT - Saturday, January 28, 2017

Westfields 2 - Jones 12, 88
Shawbury United 2 - Ellis 46, 60

Attendance 129

Westfields were held to 2-2 draw at allpay.park on Saturday by visiting Shawbury United who put up a stubborn defence and spoiled the party for Nathan Hodge’s debut.

Westfields were keen to continue their pressure on the top 2 title-chasers but had to settle for a point when they came from behind to score in the 88th minute with a fine goal from Craig Jones.

Earlier, Jones had put Westfields ahead with a header from 6 yards when he got on the end of a left wing cross following a short corner by Ben Miller in the 12th minute.

Westfields then had a couple of gilt-edged chances to increase their lead when a shot from Hodge went inches wide of the far post and then the visitors’ keeper twice saved well from Richard Greaves and Chris Ham.

Westfields went in at the break 1-0 ahead but straight after the interval the visitors got level when Stuart Ellis scored a fine goal after the visitors came out sharp off the blocks.

Midway through the half Shawbury went in front when again Ellis was on the spot to convert a fine though ball to put the visitors ahead and set up an exciting end-to-end game.

Nathan Hodge had a great chance to put the sides level when he burst through but again the Shawbury keeper produced a fine save and then other efforts from Westfields hit the crossbar and then the post as Westfields threw everything at the Shawbury defence to try and draw level.

However with the seconds ticking away Westfields’ manager Sean Edwards introduced Aidan Thomas and Sirdic Grant to the attack which gave more width down the flanks and Westfields deservedly drew level with a fine goal in the 88th minute through Man of the Match Craig Jones.

Westfields then attacked in injury time and Nathan Summers had a header disallowed for off-side as Westfields had to settle for a point in their bid for a promotion push.

On Tuesday Westfields go to Highgate United and next Saturday travel to Quorn and the following Tuesday, 7th February, face a stiff test away at Sporting Khalsa, and the following Saturday go to Heanor Town as Westfields now face an away period of 4 very important league matches.
