Willand Rovers v Wesfields

MATCH REPORT - Saturday, November 11, 2017

Willand Rovers 1 - Veal 30
Westfields 2 - Greaves 53, Jones 60

Westfields travelled to high-flying Western League side Willand Rovers on Saturday and secured a thrilling 2-1 away win with a typical hard-fought and battling cup display.

Westfields had to defend for their lives in the last 15 minutes but overcame the barrage of pressure from the home side to go through to the 3rd Round.

The opening 45 minutes presented opportunities for both sides and Richard Greaves saw a low ground shot brilliantly saved by Searle in the Willand Rovers goal and then the Devon side hit back to snatch the lead mid-way through the half when a brilliant run down the right-hand side saw the cross come over and was finished beautifully by the Willand Rovers striker to put the home side ahead.

Westfields had a few opportunities to pull level before the break but good goal-keeping by Searle kept the home side ahead at the interval.

After the break, Westfields used their substitutes effectively and Sam Gwynne and Aidan Thomas both came on and this made a big difference as Westfields pushed forward in search of the equaliser.

The equaliser came in the 53rd minute when a neat movement down the left-hand side saw Jamie Molyneux and Craig Jones exchange passes before Jones unleashed a low drive which Searle in the home goal did well to parry but only to the feet of Richard Greaves who had the easy task of putting Westfields level from 6 yards.

This signalled Westfields to lift their game and again 7 minutes later they snatched the lead with a beautiful goal when again good movement by Molyneux found Craig Jones in space and he unleashed a tremendous left-foot shot from the edge of the penalty area which flew inside the far post to put Westfields ahead.

Willand, who’d had a 10 match unbeaten spell, then began to pick up the game again and Keiron Blackburn in the Westfields goal produced 2 breath-taking saves to turn balls around the post for corners and then the home side mounted tremendous pressure on the Westfields goal in search of an equaliser to take the game into extra time.

Matt Sysum first cleared off the line and as the conditions got heavy in the rain Kane Kahaki also cleared an awkward situation before Phil Glover also headed away a dangerous cross.

Westfields were under pressure in the last 10 minutes as Willand laid siege on the Westfields goal but Blackburn saved bravely at the feet of the home striker and then twice Sam Plane got in good tackles to avert the danger at the expense of corners which were scrambled clear.

The referee then played 8 minutes injury time in which Westfields defended brilliantly to secure a Round 3 place.
