WESTFIELDS IN FA VASE EXCITEMENT

Westfields progressed into the 4th Round of the FA Vase with a thrilling 3-2 away win at Plymouth Parkway when they visited the South West Peninsula League leaders on Saturday and recorded a dramatic win in the final moments of the game.

Westfields hit back from trailing twice in the game to score two injury time goals to give them a passage into the 4th round with an end-to-end non-stop action display.

However, they had to hit back after Plymouth Parkway snatched a lead midway through the first half when a long through ball found leading goal scorer Glyn Hobbs who took the ball in his stride and rounded Keiron Blackburn to slot the ball into the empty net to put the home side ahead.

Westfields had their moments and twice Plymouth scrambled balls away when Matt Sysum had a header cleared off the line and then Ben Miller had a left foot shot saved on the line by a home defender.

However, after the break Westfields drew level when Mark Magee worked his way free on the left and fed a through ball to Aidan Thomas who hit a low drive past the home keeper into the far corner of the net to put the two sides level.

In an end-to-end game Plymouth Parkway then restored their lead midway through the second half when Glyn Hobbs again got free and cut inside from the left hand side and unleased a fantastic drive into the far corner of the net to put the Devon side 2-1 ahead.

Plymouth then mounted tremendous pressure and had large appeals for a penalty turned down and then Ethan Phillips had a great chance to sew the game up but he shot wide from 12 yards.

Westfields then broke away again and right in the 90th minute Craig Jones levelled the score with a left foot shot from the edge of the box which found the bottom corner of the net and it looked as though extra time was on the cards.  However, Westfields kept plugging away and got their final break in the dying seconds when Jamie Molyneux rode a couple of tackles on the edge of the box and then got free and slotted home a right foot shot coolly into the bottom corner from 14 yards to send the Westfields fans delirious.

Plymouth Parkway were absolutely gutted but still had a chance right at the death when they were awarded a free kick which sailed just inches over the Westfields’ bar.

Westfields now go into the 4th Round on Saturday, 6 January following their exciting last minute win away at South West Peninsula League Leaders, Plymouth Parkway.
