Quorn v Westfields
MATCH REPORT - Saturday, January 05, 2019
Quorn 2 - Brennan, Dale
Westfields 2 - Mills (pen), Moreira
JOHN MILLS SPOT-ON FOR WESTFIELDS
With new loan signing John Mills leading the attack the former Hereford FC record goal-scorer didn’t disappoint with an encouraging display when he scored from the spot and also laid on the goal for Carlos Moreira in a game which both sides served up excellent football on the 4G pitch at Quorn on Saturday.
Quorn, who had beaten Westfields 2-1 at allpay.park earlier in the season, gave a determined performance and Westfields also produced a hard-working 90 minute display in which Keiron Blackburn in the Westfields goal twice made brave saves to keep the home side at bay.
After a goal-less first half John Mills broke the deadlock from the penalty spot when Ben Hayes was put through on the wing and when he cut inside he was brought down by the advancing keeper Hadyn Whitcombe and from the resultant penalty John Mills put Westfields ahead from the spot with a well-drilled goal.
However, Quorn came back and Shay Brennan equalised in the 75th minute only for Westfields to have further opportunities when Mills shot inches wide when well placed and then curled a shot just wide of the top corner when it looked as though he’d put Westfields in front.
However, in the 88th minute Mills turned provider when he fed a lovely ball through to Carlos Moreira and the young substitute winger raced forward and planted a low shot past Whitcombe in the Quorn goal to give Westfields a 2-1 lead with just minutes remaining.
However, the home side came storming back and produced a grandstand finish when Nathan Dale rifled home a tremendous shot from outside the penalty area for the equalising goal to leave Westfields with a 2-2 draw but another precious point in their bid to gain promotion as both their close rivals Walsall Wood and Coventry Sphinx were beaten on Saturday.
Westfields now entertain Sporting Khalsa, another team in the top group, at allpay.park on Saturday when striker John Mills will make his home debut, kick-off 3pm.
Westfields’ point on Saturday keeps them in 3rd position and with 12 games still to play the championship race is still wide open.
