Westfields 3 - Magee, Jones, Cooper o.g.
WESTFIELDS WIN AWAY AT THE DOUBLE
Westfields recorded a Midland Football League double when they overcame Shawbury United 3-2 away at Ludlow on Saturday.
It was Westfields’ first league win of 2018 and ironically their first win since they beat Shawbury on Boxing Day at allpay.park.
Westfields had to battle all the way against a relegation-threatened Shawbury United side who had only last week thrashed Lye Town 7-2 and were keen to break away from the relegation position.
Westfields opened well and after both Jamie Cuss and Jamie Molyneux had gone close Westfields snatched the lead in the 18th minute when Mark Magee fired home from close range after Jamie Cuss had created the opening.
Shawbury came back into the game before the break and good defending by Phil Glover and Matt Sysum kept the home attack at bay as Westfields went in at the break ahead 1-0.
However, after the break Shawbury came out much the quicker team and soon drew level from the penalty spot when Sam Plane brought down a Shawbury striker and Captain Sean Evans equalised from the penalty spot.
Shawbury then began to take the initiative and Evans worked his way up the left flank to beat Alex Harris with a rising shot to put the home side 2-1 in front in an end-to-end game.
Westfields then came roaring back and Manager Sean Edwards put on the 3 substitutes Kingsford Adjei, Alex Hainault and Aidan Thomas, and this made a vast difference to the flow of the game and Westfields pulled level when Craig Jones scored a brilliant equaliser from the edge of the penalty area to put the 2 sides level.
In a grandstand finish Westfields pushed forward in a bid to get 3 much-needed points and it came in the 82nd minute when Sam Mendes broke well down the right-hand side and fired in a hard low cross which Keanu Cooper deflected into his own net to put Westfields 3-2 ahead.
The last 8 minutes plus injury time saw Shawbury create attack after attack but Alex Harris in the visitors’ goal cut out 3 dangerous crosses and then did well to stop a free-kick as the home team came in search of an equaliser.
Westfields defended well in the latter stages to retain their 3 valuable points which move them up to 8th position in the league table.
Westfields now face back-to-back league matches with promotion-chasing Highgate who visit allpay.park on Saturday, kick-off 3pm, and then Westfields go to Highgate next Tuesday, kick-off 7.45pm, in the return encounter.
