Westfields v Coleshill Town

MATCH REPORT - Saturday, April 14, 2018

Westfields 1 - Miller
Coleshill Town 1 - Brandison

WESTFIELDS SPOIL THE COLESHILL PARTY

Westfields gave a determined performance in the Midland Football League Premier Division fixture on Saturday when the visitors, Coleshill Town, needed to secure a win to maintain their promotion push.

Westfields however put up a stubborn resistance and gave a hard-working display and earned a 1-1 draw with a late goal from substitute Ben Miller.

In a goal-less first half Westfields had caught the eye with some good attacking play, particularly from Kingsford Adjei and Aidan Thomas who both went close with good opportunities, whilst at the other end goalkeeper Alex Harris went full-length to cut out a right-wing cross and then the Westfields keeper dived amongst the feet to claim the ball in a goal-mouth scramble just before the break when Coleshill mounted pressure and looked like taking the lead.

However, after the break the visitors did break the deadlock when Joel Brandison headed home a right-wing cross to put Coleshill into the lead.

However, Westfields’ manager Andy Bevan sent on substitute Ben Miller and within 10 minutes Miller had equalised when he got on the end of a superb through ball from midfield man Craig Jones and raced away to score a fine goal to put Westfields level.

Coleshill then came at Westfields with a strong finish but the Westfields defence particularly goalkeeper Alex Harris performed superbly and made a full-length save at the foot of the post and then Sam Plane and Sam Gwynne both made excellent tackles to prevent the visitors snatching the lead once again.

Westfields were then reduced to 10 men when striker Mark Magee who had earlier come on as a substitute was sent off for a second yellow card and Westfields played out the last 10 minutes with just 10 men but put up a tremendous defensive display and skipper Phil Glover marshalled his defence superbly to keep the title-chasers at bay as Westfields earned their 7th point in a week following a win at home against Coventry Sphinx and an away win at Rocester.

Westfields now have a home game against Heanor Town on Wednesday night and then visit Long Eaton United on Saturday, then face a busy week the following week when on Tuesday they go to Shepshed Dynamo and then on the Thursday Shepshed Dynamo visit Westfields before Westfields wrap up their home programme on 28th April with a home game against Rugby Town before they then go to Coventry United for the final game of the season on Tuesday 1st May.
