Westfields v Dunkirk

MATCH REPORT - Saturday, October 06, 2018

Westfields 2 - Rawlings, Molyneux
Dunkirk 2 - Nangle, Wright

Westfields were held to a 2-2 draw on Saturday when visiting Dunkirk from Nottingham scored a late last-ditch equaliser to earn them a point when Westfields had created enough chances to have won the game comfortably.

Westfields had started well in the early stages but wasted good opportunities when Ben Miller mis-cued in front of goal early in the first half and then a great opportunity arose for overlapping full-back Ollie Butler to head Westfields ahead when Sam Plane put over a fine left wing cross but Butler headed over the bar from 6yds.

The visitors took the lead late on in the first half when a fine left wing cross was taken smartly by Romello Nangle and he turned smartly in the box to smash the ball past Keiron Blackburn from 6yds.

Westfields still had an opportunity to draw level but again didn’t take the best of the advantages that were created.

After the break Westfields’ manager Andy Bevan wasted little opportunity in changing the team structure and brought on substitutes Carlos Moreira returning from suspension and Jamie Molyneux and within 5 minutes the combination had worked well although it was central defender Sam Rawlings who raced forward and let fly from 30yds with a cracking goal into the roof of the net to give Westfields an equaliser.

Within 2 minutes of that Westfields had taken the lead when Carlos Moreira got free on the left hand side, beat his defender and squared the ball back into the path of substitute Jamie Molyneux who crashed the ball home from 8yds to put Westfields in front.

This signalled Westfields to attack and Moreira was presented with another great opportunity but instead of shooting he side-footed the ball into the path of Molyneux whose shot was blocked.

Westfields then had a number of opportunities before they again made a substitution when Josh Thomas was brought into the side in place of Alex Hainault.

Westfields were then forced to defend as they dropped back but in the last minute of the game Dunkirk snatched an equaliser from a corner kick which was not cleared and Anthony Wright headed the ball into the roof of the net to give the Nottinghamshire visitors a point.

Westfields now play at home next Saturday to AFC Wulfrunians, who they’ve already beaten 1-0 away, in a bid to maintain their challenge at the top of the league although they’ve only taken 2 points from their last 4 home games.
