WESTFIELDS FINISH ON A WINNING DOUBLE
Westfields Football Club finished their memorable 50th Anniversary season with a superb 4-0 home win on Saturday over visiting Walsall Wood to end the season with an emphatic 4-0 result in the same way as they started with a 4-0 away win at St Andrews on the opening day of the season.
Westfields gave their supporters a reminder of their FA Cup exploits with a superb display of football from start to finish with Aidan Thomas scoring a fine hat-trick and Craig Jones and Sirdic Grant creating havoc for the visiting Walsall Wood team who were relegated on the final day of the season when for the first time all season they fell into the bottom 3 following the result at Westfields and the result at other matches in the league.
Craig Jones, Sirdic Grant and Aidan Thomas all enjoyed 5-star performances and at the end of the match Craig Jones was awarded the Westfields Supporters’ Player of the Season award after all the votes had been counted up. FA Cup goal-scoring hero Richard Greaves finished in 3rd place with young left-back Sam Plane finishing runner-up.
Westfields produced a fine display on the last game of the season for their 147 spectators although it was the visitors who should have taken the lead in only the 5th minute when Walsall Wood broke down the right hand side and when a right-wing cross came over, the ball was scooped over the bar by the visitors’ striker.
However, as Westfields settled they took the lead in the 23rd minute when a fine cross-field ball from Craig Jones found Aidan Thomas who hit the ball first time into the Walsall net to give Westfields a 1-0 lead.
Shortly afterwards Westfields increased their lead when the lively Sirdic Grant broke free on the right hand side, weaved his way past a number of Walsall defenders and put the ball through to Chris Ham who curled a shot into the top corner of the Walsall net to give Westfields a fine 2-0 lead.
After the break, and playing down the slope, Westfields increased their lead with perhaps the best goal of the season when a long ball from Craig Jones was chested down by Aidan Thomas who took the ball in his stride and neatly slotted it home low into the corner of the net to put Westfields 3-0 ahead.
Walsall looked demoralised at this stage but still came back and Joey Butlin had the chance to pull a goal back but missed from close range before Westfields added a 4th when the lively Sirdic Grant was brought down in the Walsall penalty area and Aidan Thomas stepped up to gain his hat-trick with his 3rd goal from the penalty spot.
Westfields were able to produce their FA Cup-winning form of earlier in the season and ended the season on a high note which took them up into 5th position which was a creditable performance given that they had reached also the FA Cup First Round Proper in their 50th Anniversary year.
