Man of the Match: Chris Gregan
Desborough Town win 4-2 on penalties.
Westfields lost in the first round proper of the FA Vase when a 220 round trip to Desborough Town ended 0-0 and the Northamptonshire side went through 4-2 on penalties to the second round.
Westfields who had knocked out Bromyard Town and Stone Old Alleynians in earlier rounds could not master the windy conditions and the opening 45 minutes gave early indications that the match could end goalless and go to a penalty shootout for a result.
In the opening half Westfields best effort was a Bailey Fuller shot which cleared the Desborough Town cross bar while at the other end Matt Gwynne dealt confidently in the Westfields goal.
After the break Matt Gwynne was the busier of the two keepers and he produced 2 excellent saves to prevent Desborough from breaking the deadlock.
Westfields forced a number of corners and Tyrese Sibanda fired into the side netting when well placed then Bailey Fuller shot over the bar with a powerful left foot shot.
Dan Janes, the Westfields manager, introduced 3 Westfields substitutes to try and break the deadlock but the game remained goalless with both sides were unable to find a match winner.
In the penalty shoot out both Mike McGrath and James Douglas saw their spot kicks saved by the Desborough keeper and while Matt Gwynne made one penalty save it was the Northamptonshire side that went through 4-2 on penalties in what was a very disappointing afternoon for Westfields.
