Westfields: Bailey Fuller
Man of the Match: Bailey Fuller
Westfields went clear at the top of the Hellenic League Premier Division following a 1-0 home win over local rivals Hereford Pegasus in a Bank Holiday Derby.
The game at allpay.park attracted 519 spectators and Westfields won with a 57th minute goal through Bailey Fuller which was enough to keep Westfields at the top of the league and set up next Saturdays home game with Highworth Town.
Westfields could have won more comfortably had they taken a couple of guilt edge chances as Will Dallaway had a great chance midway through the first half but his tame shot was easily saved by former Westfields Keeper Steve Sarkodie.
Both sides were penalised for niggly fouls in the opening half but Westfields ended the first half with a missed chance when following a goalmouth scramble in the Pegasus goalmouth claims for hand ball were turned down as former Westfields defender Cam Davies cleared the ball off the Pegasus goal line from a Dan Cottrill effort as Westfields seemed certain to break the deadlock.
After the break Westfields took the lead early on as Mike McGrath fed the ball up the line to James Baldwin and he beat his marker to put in a pin point cross for Bailey Fuller to nip in front of the Pegasus defence to shoot low past Sarkodie to put Westfields 1-0 ahead.
Shortly after both teams were reduced to 10 men when Westfields' defender Mike McGrath and ex Westfields player Alex Hainault were involved in a goal mouth incident and received their marching orders from Ref Josh Brookland.
Westfields re-organised their shape and young substitute Finn Waller came on and had a great opportunity to make his mark early on when he got free and went around Sarkodie but delayed his shot by which time a Pegasus defender got back to clear the danger at the expense of a corner.
Pegasus tried to come back into the game but were reduced to long range efforts which Matt Gwynne dealt with confidently to run down the clock as Westfields stayed in control to win 1-0 and stay top of the league.
Westfields next game is this Saturday at home to Highworth Town kick off 3pm allpay.park.
